Foreigners among 31 militants killed in Ghazni airstrikes

Sep 23, 2017 - 15:49

GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): At least 31 Talibaninfo-icon insurgents have been killed during airstrikes in Nawa and Awghaz districts of southern Ghazni province, an official said on Saturday.

Mohammad Hanif Rezaee, spokesman for the 203rd Thunder Military Corps, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Afghan Air Force carried out air raids in the Khairkhel area of Nawa district late on Friday night.

He added 23 insurgents were killed, including 17 foreign militants, and four other wounded. Taliban’s hideouts and two vehicles were also destroyed during the overnight raid.

Mohammad Arif Noori, the governor’s spokesman, said the Afghan National Army (ANA) had seized a huge cache of weapons in Moqur district. He added heavy and light weapons and landmines were among the weapons.

Elsewhere, eight militants were killed and four others wounded during an airstrike in the Akhoundkhel area of Awghaz district.

An air and ground operation was underway in insecure areas of Ghazni, most of which had been purged of militants, Noori claimed.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed airstrikes in Nawa district, claiming the  security forces had suffered casualties at the hands of rebels.

Nawa district has been under Taliban control for the past 14 years, and the operation was carried out there after several years.
